Information
This project captures one of the proudest and most meaningful moments of my life—a photograph taken in 1991 on the day I graduated from U.S. Navy Boot Camp at Great Lakes, IL. My parents and brother made the trip to be there, and after the ceremony, my mother snapped this picture of the three of us. I remember standing there, filled with pride, feeling the strength of their support.

A few years later, I lost my brother—and this photo became more than just a memory. It became a reminder of love, pride, and time spent together. I’ve carried this moment with me ever since.

Crafted with care using xTool’s 3mm basswood and rosewood plywood, the image is etched in warm detail and framed to highlight the strength of our bond. The two accompanying plaques—a U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman emblem and a personal dedication—serve as tributes to service, family, and the unshakable anchor of memory.

“Forever Anchored – Bruce and Dad, always with me…”

This piece doesn’t just commemorate a milestone—it holds the story of a family’s love, a brother’s memory, and a moment frozen in time.

Instruction
1
Step1: Prepare the Design Files
  • Load your image and vector files into Creative Space.

For the photo engraving:

  • Use a high-contrast version of the photo (you nailed this already).
  • Set material as 3mm basswood and use Jarvis for best shading results.
  • Use the preview feature to adjust contrast and brightness.

Set up vector cuts for:

  • Outer frame shape with circular badge space
  • Stand pieces (engraved with anchor and initials if desired)
  • Placement outlines for the plaques
2
Step2: Cut and Engrave Components
  • Engrave the photo on the basswood panel first.
  • Cut the frame overlay from 3mm rosewood.
  • Engrave and cut the stand pieces, including slots and support tabs.

Engrave the plaques.

  • Use low power, high speed with multiple passes for clean etching.

Test fit all parts before assembly.

Step3: Assembly
  • Clean all wood surfaces with rubbing alcohol to remove residue.
  • Apply a thin layer of glue to the back of the rosewood frame and attach it to the engraved basswood panel.
  • Clamp or apply pressure until dry.
  • Lightly sand any rough edges—careful not to overdo it on the veneer!

Attach Plaques

  • Apply CA glue or strong double-sided tape to the back of the Plaques.
  • Align and affix them into the cutout areas of the frame (bottom left and circular cutout).
  • Apply even pressure for a secure bond.

Install the Stand

  • Insert the angled stand leg into the two slotted base tabs.
  • Glue lightly.
  • Optional: engrave or customize the back with initials or a message.

Final Touches

  • Wipe down the entire piece with a soft cloth.
  • Optionally seal with clear polyurethane for a glossy finish and protection.
  • Display it proudly!
